Hamren baffled by elimination

Erik Hamren: Sweden will go into their final group game against France with only pride to play for

Erik Hamren was left scratching his head after Sweden were knocked out of Euro 2012 at the group stages following a 3-2 defeat by England.

In a dramatic encounter in Kiev, the Three Lions recorded a first competitive win in their history over their Scandinavian bogey team to move to within a point of the quarter-finals.But it had looked like a different scenario in the early stages of the second half when an Olof Mellberg brace cancelled out Andy Carroll's first-half header.Sweden looked good for three points, however, a brilliant substitute cameo from Theo Walcott saw the Arsenal man score an equaliser before setting up Danny Welbeck's winner.ProudAnd having seen his team also open their campaign with a surprise loss to co-hosts Ukraine, Hamren said: "The first expression is, I'm really disappointed."We have played, in my opinion, two really good halves. One, OK. One, bad. And we're here with zero points."We played a good game. I'm really proud of the players. We showed the mentality and the attitude I wanted to see."Sweden will now go into their final Group D game against France on Tuesday with only pride to play for following the defeat by England. And asked what the difference was between Roy Hodgson's side and Sweden, Hamren said: "They were much more effective than we were."
