Hodgson praises comeback win

Roy Hodgson: Pleased with battling England qualities

Roy Hodgson was relieved with how his England side battled back from a goal down to earn a crucial 3-2 win over Sweden in Kiev.

England had looked comfortable at half-time after Andy Carroll's powerful header had given them the lead after 23 minutes, but slack defending allowed the Swedes to take the lead with two goals from the unlikely source of Olof Mellberg after the break. But the introduction of Theo Walcott for James Milner on the hour mark proved to be the game's turning point. The Arsenal winger levelled the scores within a few minutes of coming on, before setting up Danny Welbeck for the winner. As a result England need just a point from their final Group D game against Ukraine in Donetsk, and Hodgson was delighted with the performance that has put them into a promising position."It was a cracking game of football," Hodgson declared. "We were reasonably comfortable at half-time and had a good control of the game before they rocked us on our heels."We knew how dangerous they were from set-pieces and they proved true to that. But it was very good the way the team responded to that.Dangerous"It's difficult at this level, we're playing against good teams. Our attacking play showed good intentions and we looked dangerous."We limited them to not too many opportunities in free play."We got a good victory against a team with good experience and a team that can boast many caps."Wayne Rooney will be available against Ukraine following suspension, and Hodgson says that the Manchester United striker is certain to start. He added: "Against Ukraine, a player like Rooney can make a major difference and I am delighted to welcome him back. If I did leave him out, all hell might break loose in the dressing room!"
